Where to stop and when to prepare for long distances without stops

Midway between St. Louis and KC lies Columbia, MO. Stop here to get gas, grab a bite to eat and stretch your legs while you explore. What can you explore here? Columbia offers beautiful state parks, museums and nature areas to see. We definitely recommend making a stop in the city of Kansas City, MO. If you don’t like driving such long distance, Kansas City makes an excellent overnight spot. There is much do see in Kansas City from museums to the Zoo and Aquarium. Not to mention all the delicious restaurants full of flavorful food. If you’re in the mood for BBQ, this is the place to have lunch/dinner! Once you pass Kansas City, there won’t be stops like that again. However, Topeka offers a Zoo, the Kansas State Capitol and a big lake to check out. If you’ve passed KC, you can grab a bite here and take a break from sitting for so long. Make sure you fill up your tank before you go any further. Like we mentioned earlier, be prepared to drive a long way without many cities between Kansas City and Denver, Colorado. But then again, here is a list of next stops where you can get gas and food.

  • Alma, KS
  • Chapman > Soloman
  • Salina (small town)
  • Wilson > Hays
  • And then a bunch of tiny cities with barely 1-2 exits until you hit Denver, CO!

In the tiny cities you might find a gas station, but don’t expect to find a restaurant or anything interesting to do.

The next big stop for your road trip to Breckenridge is definitely Denver. You can drive through here for a few minutes or take some more time to explore this city. Be prepared to drive another 1.5 hours to Breckenridge. Also, make sure you have coats nearby because you’ll drive between mountains, at a high elevation change and possibly through rain & ice! This is all even worse in winter.
